Steel sheet pile quantities and pricing calibers: driving/extraction by design pile-length mass (t); where area applies; usage fees and guide-frame install/removal across norm systems

In the main domestic systems (municipal/building/railway/highway), driven-and-extracted (retaining) steel sheet pile quantities are computed by the mass of the design pile length (effective length) in tons, not by area; usage fee = quantity (t) x duration x unit time price, with ton-day, ton-month, and per-quarter time calibers; guide frames are installed/removed per design horizontal length in linear meters. Area applies only in three cases: area-to-mass conversion, cofferdam internal-strut conversion (railway: 870kg per 10 m2 of single-layer struts), and international measurement (RICS NRM by total surface area of pile length).

Topic Positioning

Compiles the provisions of the main domestic norm systems (municipal, building, railway, highway, plus international rules) on steel sheet pile quantities and pricing: what unit for driving/extraction (retaining), where area applies, how usage (rental) fees are charged, and how guide frames and internal struts are measured — for fixing takeoff and pricing calibers in budgeting and settlement review.

Core Conclusions

1. Driving/extraction (retaining): by design pile-length mass in t (primary caliber)

Formula: pile mass (t) = count x single effective design length (m) x theoretical mass (kg/m) / 1000. Length = design effective length, not actual penetration.

  • Shenzhen SJG 84-2020 (municipal maintenance Vol. 2): "Sheet piles per the drawings or approved method statement, by design penetration depth and section, in tons. Pile mass means the design effective length — the wall face plus the embedded length below trench bottom."
  • Shenzhen SJG 111.1-2022 (utility tunnel Vol. 1): "Driven and extracted sheet piles by design pile length (embedded part) mass in t."
  • Railway TB/T 10823-2024 Vol. 2 volume notes: "sheet-pile retaining quantities by design sheet-pile mass" — driving QY-49/50, extracting QY-51/52 in t; TB/T 10831-2024 Vol. 10 FY-217~232 (by length <=6/10/15/20m, soil class I/II) also in t.
  • Highway JTG/T 3832-2018: "driven sheet piles by the design-required sheet-pile mass."
  • Shaanxi new draft (2024): "driving/extraction by design pile mass."
  • Beijing DB11/T 2382-2024 Annex D Table D.1.14: temporary drive/extract (D1-3-24 channel), permanent (D1-3-26 channel), all in t. Companion rules (check item notes before applying):
  • Non-interlocking section piles (channel, I, H, pipe — sparse driving) or simple non-vibratory methods: sheet-pile items with machinery x 0.77, else unchanged (SJG 84-2020 7.1.18; SJG 111.1-2022 same). Railway: channel/rail driving-extraction per Larsen items, machinery x 0.77.
  • Small-quantity factor: <= 50t per unit works -> labor and machinery x 1.25 (SJG 84-2020, SJG 111.1-2022).
  • Piles broken or bent in driving requiring extraction and re-driving per code are not counted twice (SJG 84-2020 7.1.18).
  • Highway: extracting via the driving work platform — no separate platform costs; clips, cut-offs, joints, and straightening are amortized in the norm; sheet-pile timber supports included (making/trial-assembly/install in driving, removal in extraction); anti-rust not included — price separately if required (JTG/T 3832-2018).

2. Usage fee (rental): quantity (t) x duration x unit time price — three time calibers

  • Ton-day: SJG 84-2020 — "sheet-pile usage fee by driving quantity x actual days, in ton-days"; internal-strut usage similarly by strut/waler install quantity x actual days.
  • Ton-month: SJG 111.1-2022 — "usage by driving quantity x monthly rental, ton-months."
  • Per quarter: TB/T 10823-2024 — "the driving items and sheet-pile retaining are compiled for drive/extract plus each quarter of use; usage fee per the method-statement duration, any part of a quarter counts as one quarter; where the statement decides not to extract, price as one-time amortization." Item QY-56 "sheet pile, each quarter of use" in t; TB/T 10831-2024 FY-233 "sheet pile quarterly usage fee" the same.
  • Material vs usage: SJG 111.1-2022 driving items exclude the pile material (usage fee); material per market rental; derusting/anti-corrosion/painting included in the usage fee. SJG 84-2020: piles as finished products, unit price incl. body, derusting, painting, anti-corrosion, and mobilization; amortized over 15 uses (adjustable), waste 5%.
  • Cap rule (SJG 84-2020): when the unit price of the usage-fee items reaches the prevailing price of the pile or corresponding section steel, stop charging.
  • Railway conversion reference: cofferdam struts at 870kg per 10 m2 of enclosed single-layer area (channel 464kg, pipe 246kg, plate 160kg) (TB/T 10823-2024).

3. Where "area" applies (domestic takeoff does not use area)

  1. Area-to-mass conversion: retaining area (m2) = wall centerline length x pile length; mass = area x mass per meter of wall face. Use product tables (e.g., SJG 05-2020 Annex D Table D.0.3 for domestic hot-rolled U piles); distinguish "single-pile kg/m" from "wall-face kg/m2" — use the latter.
  2. Cofferdam strut conversion: per the railway 870kg/10 m2 (single layer).
  3. International rules (foreign/HK-funded): RICS NRM measures sheet piling by area — "C5 The area measured for steel sheet piling is the total surface area of specified sheet pile length" (m2).

4. Guide frames and internal struts

  • Guide-frame install/removal: per design horizontal length in linear meters. SJG 84-2020: "longitudinal positioning guide frames per design length in m." SJG 111.1-2022: same. Shaanxi draft: same. Railway TB/T 10831-2024 FY-234 per 100m.
  • Internal struts: SJG 84-2020 — strut/waler install/removal by steel-strut mass in t per design dimensions; usage by install quantity x actual days in ton-days. Railway TB/T 10823-2024 — driving/extraction items exclude inter-pile struts; where occurring, per Vol. 2 Chapter 8 steel-strut items; strut items QY-53/54 per "single-layer 10 m2".
  • Amortization reference: TB/T 10821-2024 metal amortization — guide-frame rails/rings for sheet-pile driving 5 uses; cut/drilled I-beams and channels 6; cut/drilled angles and plates 3.

Applicable Boundaries

  • These are norm (consumption/budget) pricing calibers; under BOQ pricing follow the measurement standard's characteristics and units — do not mix.
  • "Design/effective length" per drawings or the approved statement — retaining face plus embedment, not actual penetration; construction waste beyond design is not measured.
  • Usage-fee time calibers (ton-day/ton-month/quarter) are system-specific — no cross-use; railway: part quarter = one quarter, no-extraction = one-time amortization; Shenzhen: 15-use amortization (adjustable).
  • Area measurement applies only to the three cases and international-rule projects; domestic driving quantities are uniformly in t — no area conversion.
  • Coefficients (<=50t x 1.25; non-interlocking x 0.77) and amortization counts differ locally — follow the current local norm and contract.
